Your Voice
By Shelly Carlson, Caarlsson Productions
Talking is the backbone of your business.
Why not do monthly self-evaluations?
As a consultant I record myself weekly and hear um, right,
right, really, really.
I have picked up a bad habit, with just a little attention
i can delete these words
from my vocabulary and you can too. Perhaps you have an employee
or colleague who isn't as polished as they might be.
Try this quick checklist. It will give you a format for self-evaluation.
Before you pick up the phone, ask yourself:
- Who, what, where when, why.
- Make concise simple active subjective/verb sentences.
- Use interesting, evocative, enthusiastic adverbs and adjectives.
- Can you explain the essence of your call in one sentence?
Check the TV guide for examples.
"A rookie cop gets involved with psychotic commodities
trader."
Voice: too loud, to Soft Nasal, whiny, too breathy.
Tempo: too slow, too fast, monotone.
Diction: standard grammar, drop it's line, you know, I mean.
Be enthusiastic. People do business with people they enjoy
speaking to.
We all love to be entertained. You want to be yourself just
be your best self.
Record yourself every week.
